Data, Technology, and Privacy Questions
|
What type of driving data is collected? |
To accurately measure driving behavior, the device collects mileage, speed, acceleration, time/date, VIN, and location.
|
How is the data transferred, and where is the data stored? |
The
device has a built-in SIM card which automatically transfers the data
to a secure database that is administered by a trusted
third party. Participating drivers can review their data via a secure website. At the end
of the Evaluation Period, Safeco receives the overall driving safety score, indicating if
the driver qualifies to have their driving setback permanently waved.
|
Does Safeco obtain vehicle location data? |
Safeco uses the global positioning system (GPS) to show drivers where unsafe events occur. Safeco and its service providers use vehicle location data only for customer service, or as required by law. Safeco may use location data for research purposes or share it with insurance regulators, but only on an anonymized basis.
|
How is the driving data used? |
The driving data is used to determine a driving safety score which measures the
likelihood of having an insurance claim. This score represents how well someone drives
and is based on a number of unsafe driving events (speeding, quick starts, hard stops, and
nighttime driving between 12 AM - 4 AM) per mile.
|
How does the participating driver qualify for permanent incident forgiveness? |
Drivers with fewer unsafe events per mile will achieve a better driving safety
score and improve their likelihood of qualifying for permanent incident forgiveness.
All drivers with a passing score at the end of the Evaluation Period will have their setback permanently waived.
Drivers can access their driving data on the secure program website and monitor how
well they are doing during the Evaluation Period.
|
Does Safeco use driving data for any other rate adjustments? |
No; driving data is only used to determine whether drivers qualify for permanent incident
forgiveness.
|
How does Safeco protect customer data? |
The driving data is stored and made available to customers through a secure third-party website. Safeco and its service providers do not share customer data, unless required by law, or on an anonymized basis. For details, please refer to our Consumer Privacy Policy at http://www.safeco.com/about-us/site-map/privacy-policy.
|
How do participating drivers access their driving data? |
Driving data and reports are available via a secure website. Each driver will have
their own login ID and password. Instructions on how to access the website will be
provided via email once the device is plugged in.
|
How do drivers receive help with the driving data website? |
Help will be provided on the website and also from a toll-free number: 1-888-647-4523
Incident Forgiveness Questions
|
How is the customer's auto insurance premium affected when they sign up for
Rewind? |
After enrolling, the driving setback will not be considered in rating during
the current policy term. Any surcharge normally associated with the
setback will be waived during the current policy term.
|
How is the customer's auto insurance premium affected if the participating driver
does not agree to the program Terms & Conditions or does not plug in the Rewind device? |
They will be removed from the program and the driving setback will be
added back to their driving record, which will likely result in a surcharge.
|
How is the customer's auto insurance premium affected if the participating driver removes
the Rewind device or drops out of the program before completing the Evaluation Period? |
They will be removed from the program and the driving setback will be added back
to their driving record, which will likely result in a surcharge.
|
How is the customer's auto insurance premium affected after the Evaluation
Period? |
For
participating drivers who prove they are responsible drivers during the Evaluation Period
based on their driving score, any surcharge normally associated with the driving setback will be
permanently waived. For drivers with too many unsafe driving events per mile during the
Evaluation Period, the eligible driving setback will be added back to their
driving record, which may result in a surcharge.
|
Does Rewind replace Safeco's other Accident Forgiveness programs? |
No; Safeco's other Accident Forgiveness programs are designed to forgive a future
driving accident for policies that are claims-free for several years. Rewind
offers a way to forgive an existing driving setback for responsible drivers who are
willing to share their driving data.

finding their OBDII port or installing the device, additional support will be provided
via a phone number and also a website.
|
How soon do participating drivers need to plug in the device? |

it is installed in. If the vehicle is in a service shop, the device can be temporarily
removed but should be plugged back in when service is complete.
|
Should the device be removed when non-participating drivers use the vehicle? |

participating drivers are also responsible for how others use their vehicle, so the device should
remain plugged in throughout the Evaluation Period.
